What is Kinship?

Perhaps you have never heard the word before and do not understand what it means. It’s based on ‘relations’ or ‘relationships’. If you are a grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew or even more loosely connected you are in ‘kinship’ – in the child’s immediate family. Sometimes you are just a close family friend.

Kinship Carer – Here we are talking about children being placed permanently in the care of an older ‘relative’. Invariably because the child’s parents are unable to care adequately for the child for what ever reason that maybe.

Sometimes these cared for children have attachment or behaviour disorders due to the trauma in their early life and some 50% are on the autistic spectrum.
